![]() ![]() When the male characters interact with the females, it's mostly to remark on how beautiful they are, and to fall in love with them instantly. There is always a short description of their attractiveness level, as if that is their only important defining feature, and for the most part, that is correct. While they are almost always described as being “strong willed”, they are written as emotional, and waiting around upon the whim of the men. THE NOT-SO-GOOD Female Roles: The portrayal of women characters in the book, while not terrible, leaves a lot to be desired. He doesn't have a large range of voices, but he has a pleasant voice and knows how to add emphasis to tell a story properly. I had to speed the book up a bit because he talks a bit slow, but a x1.1 it was much better. Good Narration: I found the narrator to be solid. I personally like these tropes once in a while, and felt this was a good application of said tropes, without blatantly following the LOTR story beat for beat. ![]() ![]() If you read at all widely in the Fantasy genre, you'll know if this is your cup of tea or not. Tolkienesque: This is definitely a Tolkien derivative work, with noble Elves, Dwarves, and Humans, and evil Goblins, Orcs, etc. Ultimatly, other than a death here or there of character we really weren't all that attached to anyway, everyone has a happy ending at the end of this book. Pug was certainly the star of this book, though about 3/4's of the way through book one we shift away from following him, and begin to follow a fairly large cast of supporting characters. The polar opposite of the current "grimdark" era, it's nice to return to a time when Fantasy was less cynical, and more inclined to leave you feeling good about yourself when you close the book. ![]() THE GOOD Characters: As mentioned, this is a "feel good" book, and that is driven mostly by the characters, who are all noble, selfless people who are always out to do the right thing. I'd say this is "feel good Fantasy" in that the characters are all good people, and generally speaking the book mostly has good things happen to good people, and a happy ending. First off, I enjoyed these books (or "book", since it's one book split in two). ![]()
